Mickie James outfought the cunning Katie Lea Burchill to successfully retain her title at Night of Champions. During Match, Mickie counters with a kick and a hurricanrana. Mickie hits a clothesline as she sells her left arm. Mickie gets a cover for a two count. She goes for her DDT but she ends up getting caught in a submission maneuver on her arm. Mickie tries to get out but Katie applies it again. They’ve lost the crowd as Katie Lea works on Mickie. She goes for a suplex and eats the tornado DDT. Three count from Mickie to retain.

Matt Hardy defeated Chavo Guerrero in United States Championship Match. Matt Hardy’s performance at Night of Champions comes as no surprise to some. Ever since returning from injury to defeat Montel Vontavious Porter at Backlash 2008 to claim the title, Hardy has taken on all comers with a renewed vigor that has firmly established himself as a valiant champion.

Kofi Kingston challenged and defeated Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship at Night of Champions even before partaking in his first match on Raw as a Superstar of that brand. During match, it seemed that Kofi’s luck had run out with Y2J having him locked in the Walls of Jericho in the center of the ring. Much to the surprise of everyone, Shawn Michaels came through the audience and laid out Lance Cade at ringside with Sweet Chin Music. HBK then distracted Jericho just long enough for Kofi to regain his composure and pick up the win to become the new Intercontinental Champion.

WWE Tag Team Champions John Morrison & The Miz defeated the father-son duo of Finlay & Hornswoggle in front of a sold-out crowd at the American Airlines Center. The Miz and John Morrison mounted a strong offense to start the match. Later, the duo punished and taunted Hornswoggle. As Hornswoggle’s father Finlay came to the rescue, it looked as if the pair was going to turn the tables against the champions. But just as Hornswoggle set up for a Tadpole Splash, ripping Hornswoggle from the top rope to pick up the pinfall.

Ted DiBiase picks up the mic and says that his partner just text messaged him and he says that he is 10 minutes away. DiBiase asks if they can just wait. Marty Elias says they can’t wait or he can just forfeit. DiBiase asks if they can start with him going solo. DiBiase doesn’t want to start against Cody but he wants Hardcore Holly. Cody hits a DDT on Hardcore Holly as soon as he tags him in. DiBiase announces Cody Rhodes as his partner. Cody tags in DiBiase. DiBiase applies the Million Dollar Dream on Holly and then gets the three count.

This year’s Draft took the ECW Championship away from his home brand, as Kane was drafted to Raw. At Sunday’s Night of Champions, however, the gold returned in the form of new ECW Champion Mark Henry when he pinned the Big Red Machine in their Triple Threat Match.

Edge defeated Batista in World Heavyweight Championship Match. Edge made sure that Batista’s apparent last chance at the title was unsuccessful, sending The Animal to his new home on Raw without the gold with the help of SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero. Edge’s victory at Night of Champions evidently puts an end to the nearly year-long rivalry with The Animal – a rivalry that saw the Ultimate Opportunist victorious over Batista each time they faced each other with the gold hanging in the balance.
